Teachers tutorial - Refining your online search with web directories

If you are clear about the topic of your query, start with a Web directory rather than a search engine. Directories probably won't give you anywhere near as many references as a search engine will, but they are more likely to be on topic.

A web directory or link directory is a directory on the World Wide Web. It specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links. A web directory is a subject-tree style catalogue that organizes the Web into major topics such as education, health, science, etc. A web directory is not a search engine and does not display lists of web pages based on keywords; instead, it lists web sites by category and subcategory.

Web directories are equipped with their own keyword search engines that allow you to search through their indices for the information you need.
Under each of these topics is a list of subtopics, and under each of those is another list, and another, and so on, moving from the more general to the more specific.

Examples of famous web directories are 'Open Directory Project, Google Directory or Yahoo'.

To find out about Web page publishing from Yahoo, select the Computers and Internet Topic, under which you find a subtopic on the Wide World Web. Click on that and you find another list of subtopics, several of which are pertinent to your search: Web Page Authoring, CGI Scripting, Java, HTML, Page Design, Tutorials. Selecting any of these subtopics eventually takes you to Web pages that have been posted precisely for the purpose of giving you the information you need.

Education directories are full of information about educational institutions. Usually education directories contain collections of education sites including schools, colleges and universities, as well as websites of various training courses, distance learning and much more.

An example of education directory is 'Infomine'. Infomine is authoritative free education directory whose mission - is to collect online resources related to universities, sciences, education and students.

Useful links:
* Educational Web Directory Websites
 * Education Web Directory offers links to many education related sites and resources. I searched for 'pre-school' links and result page showed many site links and resources. There is only one down side of the site that many links were dead which means site is not updated regularly. Though you can still find many good sites through this link.
